Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Medicare benefit of 100 days work, following the required 72 hour hospitalization?
Your hospital physician determines that you will benefit from additional skilled nursing care and therapy upon discharge. The hospital discharge planner contacts Park View or the resident/family ask the Discharge Planner to contact Park View as their preferred rehab provider. Park View reviews medical records to determine “medical necessity” and the Medicare insurance.
If you have traditional Medicare, usually the first 20 days at Park View are paid by Medicare. On days 21-100, Medicare pays 80% and your secondary insurance pays 20%. If you do not have secondary insurance, that 20% portion is paid by the resident’s personal funds. To use Medicare days, the resident must participate and make progress in improving self-care skills through therapy and nursing care.
If you have an Advantage Plan (Part C) for your Medicare insurance, a pre-authorization is required for admission. An advantage plan may limit the number of days you are allowed for rehabilitation.
Can I change my Medicare insurance yearly?
While living independently, open season to change Medicare plans is October-December of each year.
Residents in long term care can change coverage in any month.
What happens if I need to transition to long term care after my 100 days?
Occasionally it occurs that someone does not make progress and is unable to return to independent living. The private cost beyond the Medicare covered days is $145/day for a semiprivate room and $175/day for a private room. Additional costs would include monthly medications, incontinence products, and personal purchases for snacks, etc.
If long term care insurance was purchased, the monthly cost is reimbursed to you following your monthly payment to Park View. Medications, incontinent supplies, and personal purchases are typically not covered by long term care insurance.
If you have Texas Medicaid, an application is required to change from the community to the facility. During this time you are considered “Medicaid Pending”. Each month you will pay Park View your social security check minus $75 which you maintain for personal items-such as preferred toiletries, snacks, soda, cigarettes.
If you do not have Texas Medicaid, an application can be submitted 30 days after admission. There are qualifying limitations related to financial assets. Referral to a lawyer to assist in the process is often recommended. The Park View Business Office is helpful in answering basic questions and referrals as necessary.
